175 years ago: Joseph Smith and his followers flee Ohio after bank collapse

On January 12, 1838, Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints leader Joseph Smith and his followers fled Kirtland, Ohio to avoid arrest persecution by angry investors after a bank founded by Mr. Smith had failed during the Panic of 1837. The Mormons' next stop was in Missouri.
